Bridgeport resident Miguel Angel Mendez-Urena, 34, was charged by a federal grand jury in New Haven with cocaine trafficking offenses, US Attorney John Durham announced this week.
Durham said that Mendez-Urena allegedly coordinated the shipment of cocaine through the US Mail from Puerto Rico to various locations in Bridgeport, and the shipment of drug proceeds to individuals in Puerto Rico.
Mendez-Urena was arrested on May 15 after he accepted delivery of a package from Puerto Rico with approximately 500 grams of cocaine.
According to the indictment, Mendez-Urena was charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute, and to possess with intent to distribute, five kilograms or more of cocaine, one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and one count of using the U.S. Mail to distribute the proceeds of unlawful activity.
If convicted, faces a mandatory minimum term of 10 years and a maximum term of life in prison. He has been detained since his arrest. No return court date has been announced.
